Mild December weather allows work to progress on Driftless Area Education and Visitor Center

Because of, but also in spite of, the unseasonably mild early December weather, work has continued to progress on the Driftless Area Education and Visitor Center located just south of Lansing on the Columbus Property. Although the several inches of rain received the weekend of December 12-13 coupled with the lack of frozen ground has recently made for a rather muddy job site, the warmer than average temperatures for the first half of December have allowed for much of the structural foundation to begin to take shape, such as the pouring of concrete walls for the Center pictured above. Since the project started in November, the building site has been excavated to the bottom level of the structure, and footings and foundation walls have been nearly completed. Other work completed on the project includes the drilling of two wells for the building's geothermal system, although they await connection. The horizontal directional boring of the six-inch water main has been completed between the building site and the City of Lansing wastewater treatment plant. The remainder of the horizontal boring for the water and wastewater lines is scheduled to be completed within the next two weeks. Work is planned to continue on the construction project as weather permits. Submitted photo.
