by Jason Meyer

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors opened its Monday, January 18 meeting with the approval of minutes from the Board's January 11, 12 and 14, 2016 meetings before proceeding to public comments.
Ardie Kuhse, Business and Tourism Coordinator with Allamakee County Economic Development, presented the Board with information regarding this summer’s annual WMT Great Eastern Iowa Tractorcade. The 17th annual event, which will be based in Waukon this summer, will be June 12-15. More information may be found on the front page of this week’s Standard.
Local rural resident Nanferd Felke also spoke before the Board regarding his concern with the rate at which water tables are dropping. Felke presented the Supervisors with information from national news publications, and asked the Board to review the information and keep it in mind.
Librarians from the county’s six libraries - Harpers Ferry, Lansing, New Albin, Postville, Waterville and Waukon - were on hand to discuss their annual budget request.
The group thanked the Supervisors for their support in the past, and urged their continued support. In doing so, Cindy Berns, Librarian at the Postville Public Library, presented a proposal for calculating the County’s contribution that will aid in keeping the support level at the historical level and growing into the future. The Board members expressed their thanks to the Librarians and the services provided, and will consider the request during their ongoing budget work sessions.
The Supervisors also discussed the sale of insulation removed from Makee Manor. It was decided the Board will advertise the nearly 100 sheets of 4’x8’x8” polystyrene insulation in lots of 10 in the January 27 issues of the Standard and Postville Herald. Deadline for bids will be Friday, February 5, to be awarded Monday, February 8 during the regular board meeting.
