The Waukon girls track team is fielding 41 team members for its 2017 campaign, with more than half of this season’s team members being listed as returning letterwinners from last season. A total of 22 varsity veterans return for this season, some of them not only returning with experience at the highest level of Iowa high school competition with State Meet qualification, but also winning medals at that season grand finale last spring.
Headlining that list of returnees is a collection of seven seniors in Claire Beyer, Grace Blocker, Lanci Bulman, Katelynn Griffith, Erika Johnson, Meredith Lensing and Regan Wasson. Juniors Emily Brown, Lauren Elliott, Alexz Grampovnik and Laurel Keenan add to that roster of letterwinning returnees, with half of this season’s varsity veteran experience coming from the youngest possible group able to do so in sophomores Lauryn Behrend, Brigid Berns, Zaida Bockman, Nicole Campbell, Cassidy Byrnes, Kyara Dahlstrom, Lauren Griffith, Megan O’Neill, Emma Roe, Sydney Ross and Brooke Wasson.
The Indians were scheduled to get their season underway with their Northeast Iowa Conference Indoor Meet at Luther College in Decorah Tuesday, March 21 before competing in their first outdoor competition of the season at the Frostbite Invitational hosted Tuesday, March 28 by Sumner-Fredericksburg. The track Tribe will then prepare for the Tuesday, April 4 Comet Relays at Charles City.
