Jean Pufahl

Jean M. Pufahl, 98, of Waukon died Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 15 at Rossville Presbyterian Church in Rossville with Pastor Tim Rupert officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

Jean Maxine Pufahl was born April 8, 1919 in Volney, the daughter of Ernie and Sylvia (Huffman) Smith. She attended Cherry Valley, Forest Mills, Volney and Rossville elementary schools before graduating from Waukon High School in 1936.

November 25, 1936, she and Paul Wesley Pufahl were married in a ceremony at the home of Rev. Van Nice in Waukon. Jean and Paul farmed in Linton Township of Allamakee County until moving to Waukon in 1973. Jean spent a lot of time taking particular care of the yard and garden both at the farm and after moving to town.

Since her marriage, Jean was a very active member of Rossville Presbyterian Church and its UPW. She was also a member of Eastern Star for many years. Raising flowers, both inside and outside of the house, playing bridge, entertaining friends, and meeting with her Friday night women’s club were some of Jean’s favorite pastimes. She and Paul traveled to area auctions where she collected a number of antiques.

Family was important to Jean and she loved taking care of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also good at making sure that both her and Paul’s extended family got together at least once each year where she served her special chicken hot-dish.

Survivors include her daughter, Nancy (Ron) Adam of Monona; her daughter-in-law, Betty (Ric) Zarwell of Lansing; three grandchildren: Reggie (Robin), Craig (Renae) and Rodney Adam; four great-grandchildren: Tiffany (Mike) Handke, and Spencer, Corey and Emily Adam; her sister, Lorayne Gallagher; and her brother-in-law, Bill Anderson.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul (1983); her son, Gary (1963); two brothers: Ora (Vi) and Marcus (Marion) Smith; three sisters: Luella (Myron) Gibbs, Gretta (Jack) Keepers and Mavis Anderson; and a brother-in-law, Tom Gallagher.
