Christine Hammel

Christine (Chrissy) Marie Hammel, age 48, of Lansing passed away Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at Gundersen Clinic in La Crosse, WI surrounded by family. A family graveside service will be held at Gethsemane Cemetery, Lansing before a “Celebration of Life” Saturday, December 16. We will celebrate this amazing woman Saturday, December 16 at the Driftless Center, 1944 Columbus Road, Lansing, from 4-7 p.m.

May 2, 1969, a baby girl was born to Donald and Linda (Halverson) Hammel. The doctors said she wouldn’t live but a few days. She defied them. And when she was a sweet little girl, the doctors said she wouldn’t live to see adulthood. She laughed at them. And she grew to be a strong, smart, witty woman who loved her family more than anything.

She had her physical limitations and endured more tragedy than most could imagine, but that didn’t stop her from embracing the good in life. Far from it, she approached everything and everyone with an unbelievable sense of humor. And while she was often underestimated, anyone who spent more than a minute with her knows she could match wits with the best of them. She gave the best hugs, loved getting whisker kisses, playing cards, watching Wheel of Fortune and Golden Girls, doing crosswords, and just spending time with her loved ones.

She was a fighter, a wild woman, a beloved daughter, sister, niece, cousin and friend. She taught us all about living life to its fullest even when you’re dealt a pretty terrible hand. And she was so thankful to those who spent time with her and took care of her; so many people. She always took the time to tell them, “love you!” And she did. And we loved her.

Chris is survived by her father, Donald Hammel of Lansing; two brothers, Gregory James (Hiralda) Hammel and Jerry Hammel of New Albin; two sisters, Heidi Hammel and Jill (Josh) Mitchell of New Albin; four nephews, Jared Hammel of Holmen, WI, Aramis Hammel of Minot, ND, Caleb (Samantha Arnal) Fink of Cottage Grove, MN and Kyle Fink of Roberts, WI; her nieces, Jordan Hammel and Jalen (Andrew) McCleary of La Crosse, WI and Kinsey Fink of Richfield, MN; three great-nephews, Abrahm McCleary of La Crosse, WI, and Evan and Isaac Mitchell of New Albin; four great-nieces, Emma and Ellie Fink of Cottage Grove, MN, Ava Mahr of New Albin and Chloe Hammel of Eitzen, MN; and many aunts, uncles and cousins who adored her.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Linda Jean (Halverson) Hammel; her grandparents, Donald and Phyllis Hammel and Harvey and Sue Halverson.
