William Schneeberger

William E. Schneeberger, 89, of Waukon died Friday, February 16, 2018 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Memorial services will be held Saturday, February 24 at 2 p.m. at Zion United Church of Christ Fellowship Hall in Waukon, with Pastor Samantha Houser officiating. Burial will be held at a later date.

Friends may call from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, February 24 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Robey Memorial Library, Waukon Good Samaritan Center or Veterans Memorial Hospital Foundation, all in Waukon.

William Edwin Schneeberger was born August 10, 1928 in Chicago, IL, the son of William Conrad and Lorna (Brandt) Schneeberger. He graduated from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology with a BSEE in Terre Haute, IN in 1949. Bill served in the United States Army, Signal Corps in White Sands, NM from 1951 until 1953.

In 1955, he married Greta D. Engst and they had three children: Ann, Heidi and Kirsten; Greta died in 1977. In 1962, Bill went to work for Coliseum Electric Company in Chicago, IL as a journeyman electrician; he later bought the business before selling it and retiring in 1984. In 1978, he married Shirley Mae Irwin. They moved to Waukon and bought 35 acres east of town, where they planted black walnut trees.

Bill volunteered and served on many boards, including Waukon Industries, chairman of Waukon Economic Development, treasurer and chairman of Allamakee Tourism, Allamakee Historical Society and Allamakee 911 Board. Bill was also president of the Iowa Chapter of the Black Walnut Council and was named to the Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame.

He loved to travel; his most memorable trips were to the Great Wall of China, two trips to Germany, Switzerland and several trips out West. He was an avid reader, particularly of WWII history. The family would like to especially thank Dr. Steven Perkins and Good Samaritan Society for his care the past several years.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Schneeberger of Waukon; three daughters: Ann (Mike) Behn of Broomfield, CO, Heidi (Dan) Nuttle of West Dundee, IL and Kirsten (Paul) Brandwin of Oswego, IL; his step-children: Lynn (Dean) Sorensen of Waukon, John (Karen O’Malley) Irwin of Elmhurst, IL and Wayne (Lisa) Irwin of Downers Grove, IL; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Lois (Mark) Barton of Bellport, NY; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Greta.
