Kee softball team wins fifth consecutive and third perfect UIC championship, extends conference win streak to 60 games and wins three of four at Don Bosco Tournament

The Kee softball team reigns supreme over the Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) for the fifth consecutive year, closing out its 2018 season with three final doubleheader sweeps this past week to claim its third consecutive undefeated UIC crown and extend its current league win streak to 60 consecutive games dating back to a lone Upper Iowa Conference loss to North Fayette Valley during the 2015 season. This season’s unblemished UIC mark of 16-0 continued to be compiled in dominating fashion again this season, as the Kee girls outscored their league opponents by a combined 205-3 result but did not get a chance to face North Fayette Valley in UIC play this summer after an already postponed June 20 doubleheader was again called off due to weather this past Tuesday, June 26 and has no room to be made up due to postseason tournament play already getting underway this week.

This season’s Upper Iowa Conference mark of 16-0 is just part of the Hawks’ 33-5 regular season record. That season mark represents the most wins of any Class 1A team in the state of Iowa this season and ranks among the top five in all classes for wins so far this season in the state of Iowa.

The final steps toward that third consecutive Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) season sweep for the Hawks began with equal wins of 13-0 in six and four innings at MFL/MarMac Monday, June 25 before the June 26 North Fayette Valley cancellation. The Hawks then posted their first seven-inning UIC win, 4-0, at West Central before downing the host Blue Devils in this season’s more typical mercy-rule fashion, 12-0 in five innings, Wednesday, June 27. This season’s UIC sweep was completed with mercy-rule victories of 11-0 and 10-0, both in five innings, at home vs. South Winneshiek in a doubleheader rescheduled from June 21 by stormy weather.

Following that sweeping UIC wrap-up, the Hawks kept up their sweeping ways for most of the two-day Don Bosco Tournament Friday and Saturday, June 29-30. The Kee diamond dwellers opened the tournament with wins of 10-2 over Class 2A 14th-rated Jesup before downing Class 3A Union by a 10-1 result Friday, June 29. Saturday’s competition saw the Lady Hawks pull out a 3-2 win over Dyersville Beckman in the morning before finishing the tournament with one of the most anticipated match-ups of the entire event, an afternoon game with Class 3A third-rated Waterloo Columbus, where the Hawks fell by just a 3-0 final result.

The Hawks were next scheduled to open postseason tournament play at home Tuesday, July 3, with further postseason details printed elsewhere in the print edition and e-edition of The Standard.
