The Waukon volleyball team had just one event on its schedule this past week, its own home invitational tournament Saturday, September 15. Had Spring Grove, MN not been invited to that event, the Tribe netters apparently would have claimed their own tournament crown, as the only two losses the Indians suffered Saturday were both to Spring Grove in straight sets as the Lions, instead, played their way to this season’s tournament championship, defeating the Tribe both in their four-team pool match and again in the semifinals of the tournament’s championship bracket on the way to Spring Grove also defeating MFL/MarMac, 21-8 and 21-13, in the tournament championship game to finish undefeated on the day.

The Indians began the tournament with a sweep of Postville by scores of 21-9 and 21-5. Senior Brigid Berns led the Indian offense with three kills, with junior Rebecca Thorstenson and the sophomore pair of Delaney Nagel and Margaret Wacker each knocking down two winners. Senior Maddie Ahlstrom posted six assists and junior Alison Sherman added three helps, with freshman Emily Bieber digging up three saves and junior Maddie Ellingson adding two digs. Senior Ally Goltz and sophomore Mia Strub each served up a team-high four aces, with Bieber and junior Carissa Bockman each also adding one ace and Goltz, Berns and Bieber each serving up perfection in six, four and two service attempts, respectively.
