Carol Quam

Carol Leone Quam, age 76, of Decorah died peacefully May 14, 2019 surrounded by her family at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, May 18 at the St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah with Rev. Donald Hertges presiding. Burial was in the St. Benedict Cemetery.

Carol was born July 1, 1942, the daughter of Joseph and Adeline (Waller) McCormick, in Waukon. Carol attended and graduated from Decorah High School in 1960.

Carol was united in marriage to Carsten Quam at St. Benedict Catholic Church October 8, 1960. She was the proud mother of three children, Michael, Theresa and Brenda.

Carol worked at DECO Products for 49 years. She was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church and was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. When she wasn’t working she enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Family was the most important thing to Carol.

She loved supporting her grandchildren with the sports and arts they participated in.

She was well known in her family for her famous angel food cake. Carol liked to watch NASCAR races and support Jeff Gordon, she was also a big Iowa Hawkeye fan. Her sweet and gentle demeanor will be missed by all who loved her.

Carol’s survivors include her husband, Carsten Quam of Decorah; one son, Michael (Deb Ryan) Quam of Waukon; two daughters, Theresa (Randy) Stortz of Decorah and Brenda (Kevin) Hovey of Decorah; 11 grandchildren: Natasha Quam of Brooklyn, NY, Ryan (special friend Janelle Reasoner) Quam of West Des Moines; Bryce (special friend Kelly Donlon) Sivesind of Cedar Rapids, Brianne (special friend Cody Massman) Sivesind of Decorah, Derrick (Carley) Stortz of Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington, Dustin (Erica) Stortz of Ankeny, Darren (Lizzy) Stortz of West Des Moines, Trisha (Cody Reicks) Stortz of North Liberty, Krystle (Percy) Starr of Lenexa, KS, Walker (Jennifer) Hovey of Nashua and Nichole (fiancé Kevin Hotvedt) Hovey of Decorah; 15 great grandchildren; two brothers, Donald (Pat) McCormick of Decorah and Kenneth (Mary) McCormick of Clear Lake; six sisters-in-law, Helen McCormick of Decorah, Jule McCable of Decorah, June Juve of Escondido, CA, Nancy (Ronnie) Zweibohmer of Decorah, Penny (Larry) Mestad of Decorah and Maribeth Rover of Waterloo; six brothers-in-law, Jim Ellingson of Decorah, Milton (Orma) Quam of Decorah, Norman (Violet) Quam of Decorah, Roger (Louise) Quam of Decorah, Dale (Evie) Quam of Decorah and Alfred (Deb) Quam of Decorah; one aunt, Mary Waller of Poynette, WI; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph McCormick and Adeline McCormick; her mother- and father-in-law, Adolph Milford Quam and Gertrude Elsie Quam; two brothers, Jerry McCormick and Dale McCormick; one sister, Joyce Gates; four brothers-in-law, Roy Quam, Kenneth Juve, Robert Dahlstrom and Gary Gates; three sisters-in-law, Alice Quam, Shirley Dahlstrom and Elsie Lewis; six nieces, Janet Dahlstrom, Lori Quam, Donna Bergen, Dawn Bergen, Cindy Burdick and Melita Quam; and two nephews, Terry McCormick and Kyle McCormick.
