Mildred Osterholz

Mildred L. Osterholz, 99, of Waukon died Wednesday, July 10, 2019 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 13 at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in Waukon, with Pastor Tim Rupert officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mildred Louise Osterholz was born January 9, 1920 in Waukon, the daughter of Samuel J. and Mathilda (Nelson) Kaeser. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waukon, graduated from Waukon High School in 1937 and attended Waukon Junior College.

January 17, 1941, she married Ralph Willard Osterholz. They were the parents of two sons, Richard and Kenneth. After they were married she joined Zalmona Presbyterian Church in Waukon where she held offices in the P.W., was ordained as an Elder, and was the church organist for over 25 years. They lived and farmed on the Osterholz Century Farm in Union Prairie Township before they retired in 1991 and moved into Waukon where they built a new home. Mildred has been a resident at Northgate Care Center for the past four years.

Mildred volunteered at Makee Manor for many years, at Good Samaritan Center where she served on the advisory board, and at Northgate Care Center. She was a former member of the New Century Club and a founding member of the Waukon Toastmistress Club. Mildred enjoyed music, poetry, crocheting, crossword puzzles, having coffee with friends, and spending special times with her family.

Survivors include her two sons: Richard Osterholz of Independence, MO and Kenneth (Linda) Osterholz of Norwalk; three granddaughters: Wenona (Matt) Crutcher of Independence, MO, Anna (Michael) Osterholz-Doss of Blue Springs, MO and Gretchen (Dan) Sousek of Des Moines; a great-grandson, Sebastian Sousek; a niece, Janet (Tom) Smith of Gilbert, AZ; and a great-niece, Debra (Dave) Bowling of Cedar Falls; a great-great-niece, Lauren Bowling; and a great-great-nephew, Ryan Bowling. Mildred is also survived by her very special friends: Ruby and Nyles Herman, Duane and Marian Meier, JeanAnn and Bill Kern, Carlton Christianson and Corene Peck. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph, who died in 2012; a grandson, Samuel John Osterholz; a daughter-in-law, Delpha Dea Osterholz; and a sister, Pearl (Kenyon) King.

Honorary casketbearers were Carlton Christianson, Nyles Herman, Eugene Sanderman, Frank Sivesind, Jim Winke, Dr. Arlen and Chris Wonderlich, and the Zalmona Presbyterian Congregation. Casketbearers were Donald Fruechte, Rick Larson, Dr. Craig Phipps, Larry Snitker, Tony Baxter and Duane Meier.
