In its only competition scheduled for the week, the Waukon volleyball team hosted fellow Northeast Iowa Conference squad Crestwood in its annual “Think Pink” Night to raise awareness of October being designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. With both teams adorned in pink jerseys for the night, it was the Indians who ended up on the short end of a black-and-blue battle with the visiting Cadets, falling in straight sets by narrow scores of 22-25, 23-25 and 17-25.

The Indians were victimized by 36 Cadet kills that provided nearly half of the visitors’ point total, with 6’3” senior middle hitter and Iowa women’s basketball recruit Sharon Goodman providing 12 of those on her own, along with three solo blocks and assisting on four more. Crestwood gave away 12 points on hitting errors and only misfired on four serves for Indians points, while serving up twice as many of their own points with eight aces. The Indians hammered out 29 kills while only misfiring on eight attacks, but also gave away eight points on serving errors while only collecting six immediate points on service aces.

Now holding a 9-13 overall record, including a 1-4 mark in Northeast Iowa Conference play, the Indians were next scheduled to wrap up their dual match season at home against Charles City Tuesday, October 15 before playing in the Northeast Iowa Conference Tournament Saturday, October 19 hosted by New Hampton. The net Tribe will then return to New Hampton Wednesday, October 23 to begin postseason play against the sixth-rated Chickasaws in the opening round of Class 3A regional tournament play.
