Gertrude Hagen

Gertrude Jean Hagen, 90, of Waukon died Sunday, January 12, 2020 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, January 20 at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waukon with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Gertrude was born August 9, 1929 in Ludlow Township, rural Waukon, the daughter of Theodore and Emma (Grotegut) Henning. She was baptized and confirmed at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon and graduated from Postville High School. After high school, she taught for one year in rural Allamakee County.

November 1, 1947, she married Roland Lawson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed in Jefferson Township, where they raised their family; they later divorced.

January 7, 1984, she married Robert Hagen at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church. Gert worked at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon for 28 years before retiring in 2000. After retiring, she volunteered for three years for the senior citizens group.

She was a member of Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church, where she was active in the ladies circles. Gert enjoyed playing cards, reading, doing word searches, crocheting, and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. She loved spending time with her family and friends and was very devoted to her dog, Muffy.

Survivors include her children: Susan (Bob) Gorton of Marion, Mary (Jim) Severson of Osseo, WI, Nancy (Richard) Lacey of Guttenberg, Christine (Michael) Thompson of Decorah, Ricky (Lena) Lawson of Red Bank, NJ, David (Lucy) Lawson of Waukon, Mark (Leslie) Lawson of Summerville, SC, Randy Lawson of Waukon and Reggie (Alessia Haas) Lawson of La Crosse, WI; four stepchildren: Jeff (Kelly) Hagen, Cindy (Jim) Hobelsberger, Ricki (Nilsa) Hagen and Kristi Hagen; 31 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty (Virgil) Opfer of Waukon; one brother, Robert (Dorothy) Henning of Ossian; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert Hagen, who died in 2004; two sons, Lee and Jerry Lawson; five grandchildren, Brian Gorton,  Marissa Lawson, Kohbey Lawson, Wade Drievold and Wayne Hegland; a great-grandchild, Ryan Blackwell; one sister, Lorraine (Harlen) Koenig; and four brothers: Reuben (Charlotte) Henning, Lawrence (Alice) Henning, Irvin (Norma) Henning and Calvin (June) Henning.

Honorary casketbearers were Brody and Justin Lawson. Casketbearers were Brent and Casey Gorton, Mike Lacey, Erik Drievold, Jason Kuennen, and Kaleb, Kyley and Joshua Lawson.
