Waukon basketball boys have season ended with 69-61 district loss to Crestwood

Senior hustle ... Waukon boys basketball seniors Alyx Ede and Logan Houg put some full-court defensive pressure on this Crestwood ball handler in the Indians’ 69-61 home loss to the Cadets in the semifinal round of Class 2A District 7 tournament play Thursday, February 20. The senior pair joined classmates Carter Benzing, Zach Davison, Asher Fahey, Reed Kelly and Carson Wille in each suiting up one final time for the Waukon boys basketball program with the loss. The “rubber match” third meeting between the Waukon boys basketball team and fellow Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) squad Crestwood certainly had more meaning to it than just deciding which team would win a three-game series when the two teams took to the floor in Waukon Thursday, February 20 for their Class 2A District 7 semifinals battle that would determine whose season would end and whose would extend. Having split their regular season home and away series in NEIC play with an early 64-38 loss at Crestwood and a more recent 60-57 Indian win at home, that home court advantage for the Indians waned away in the second half of this contest as the visiting Cadets outgunned the Tribe after the halftime break to turn a 37-35 Indian lead at that midway point recess into a 69-61 end to Waukon’s 2019-2020 season.

The loss ends the Indian boys basketball season with a 13-9 overall record that included a 5-7 mark in Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) play that placed the bucket Tribe fifth in the final seven-team NEIC standings. Crestwood advanced on to play Dyersville Beckman Tuesday, February 25 in the District 7 championship game, with the winner advancing on to Substate play to compete for a Class 2A State Tournament berth.
