For more than one reason: Allamakee County residents encouraged to vote by mail for June 2 Primary Election

Allamakee County Auditor Denise Beyer encourages everyone to vote by mail for the June 2 Primary. For the health of voters and the poll workers, and to help stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus, voting by mail is being strongly encouraged.
Voters can have a ballot mailed to them in one of several different ways:

1. Fill out the Absentee Ballot Request form printed in the 4/22/20 publication of The Standard (also available in pdf format below), and mail it to Allamakee County Auditor, 110 Allamakee Street, Waukon, IA 52172.
2. Go to www.allamakee.us/auditor2 and print the Primary 2020 Absentee Ballot Request form, fill it out and mail it to the same address as in #1 above.
3. Call the Auditor’s office at 563-568-3522 and tell them how many Absentee Ballot Request forms they would like mailed to their household.
4. All registered voters will also be receiving Absentee Ballot Request forms from the Secretary of State within a week or two.

Remember, everyone must sign their own Absentee Ballot Request form, and the last day to submit an Absentee Ballot Request to the Auditor’s office for the June 2 Primary Election is May 22 by 5 p.m.

LIMITED POLLING SITE LOCATIONS
There will only be three polling places open in Allamakee County June 2 for the Primary Election, due to the Coronavirus and to help keep at-risk poll workers healthy. This may be an additional reason to vote by mail.

One site will be in Lansing at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for voters who normally vote in New Albin, Lansing and Harpers Ferry. This includes the townships of Union City, Iowa, Lansing, Lafayette, Center, Fairview and Taylor, as well as the cities of New Albin, Lansing and Harpers Ferry.

The second and third sites will both be in Waukon. One site at the Waukon Banquet Center will include voters who normally vote at the Banquet Center, plus those who normally vote in Waterville, Dorchester and Postville. This includes the townships of French Creek, Makee, most of Jefferson, most of Union Prairie, most of Ludlow, Franklin, Post, Linton, Paint Creek, Waterloo and Hanover, and the cities of Postville and Waterville.

The other site in Waukon will be at the First Baptist Church, next door to the Banquet Center, and will include voters from all three wards in the City of Waukon, and also the remaining voters from Union Prairie, Ludlow and Jefferson townships that normally vote at the NICC Waukon Center, St. John’s Lutheran Church or the Allamakee County Courthouse.

OTHER VOTING OPTIONS
In-person absentee voting begins May 4 at the Auditor’s office in the Allamakee County Courthouse. If the courthouse offices are not back open to the public on this date, listen to local radio and watch social media and the newspaper and courthouse websites for where this in-person voting will be held.

Curbside voting is also an option, both at the in-person voting location that begins May 4, and at the polls on election day. Curbside voting does involve more interaction than the voting by mail option in a person’s home, so voting by mail is the best option for everyone’s health and safety.

Voting by mail could also reduce travel time, will reduce lines at the polls, will help dedicated poll workers stay healthy, and will help stop the spread of COVID-19. There will be safety measures taken at polling locations, such as hand sanitizers, disinfecting wipes, and taped marks on the floor to designate six-feet social distancing in an effort to keep those working the polls and those choosing to go to the polls healthy. But again, Allamakee County Auditor Denise Beyer encourages everyone to Vote By Mail – for the health of it!

Anyone who may be uncertain how voting by mail works, how to assemble the envelopes after they vote their ballot so they can return it correctly to the Auditor’s office, how to change party to vote in the Primary, or have any other election questions, is asked to call the Auditor’s office at 563-568-3522.
