Baptist churches host first drive-in service for Easter Sunday ...

First Baptist Church of Waukon and Center Baptist Church of Lansing hosted their first drive-in service Easter Sunday, April 12. A total of 48 vehicles were present at the First Baptist Church parking lot in southeast Waukon (pictured below), and the service was live streamed on the First Baptist Church public Facebook page and YouTube channel. The service was broadcast live over a radio transmitter and radio frequency of 91.5 FM. WW Homestead Dairy of Waukon is to be thanked for the loan of the radio transmitter to make it possible for individuals attending to hear the service from their vehicle radios.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds’ proclamation allows vehicles to meet in this manner, provided that no more than 10 people are in one vehicle and that everyone remain in their vehicle at all times, with windows, sunroofs and/or convertible tops closed. Those present honored these safety guidelines and everyone was very grateful to worship together on Easter Sunday in this unique and memorable manner. “Great to worship our Risen Savior with our church family. Thankful to all who helped to make this happen!” attendee Maxine Bloxham exclaimed.

Rev. Duane Smith and Rev. Matthew Majewski (pictured right to left, respectively, in the photo above underneath a small tent erected to help shield them from that morning’s rainy weather) shared a two-part sermon; Pastor Smith emphasized the events of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and Pastor Majewski emphasized the significance of the Resurrection to every believer in Jesus Christ. Many people were involved “behind the scenes” with the planning and also decorating the church windows and two crosses with lilies.

“We wanted to do something special for Easter Sunday for our church and community in light of all that’s transpired lately with the COVID 19 church closures. However, it had to be an event that honored the safety precautions in place. A drive-in worship service seemed to be a unique idea that fit the bill! Our church leaders thought it was one we should pursue, and everything else fell into place after that. It was a distinctive manner to worship our Resurrected Savior, Jesus Christ, and we wanted to offer it to the entire community to join us,” Pastor Smith asserted.

Due to the overwhelming positive response, another drive-in service may be planned again in the future. Photos and information submitted by Cristina Smith.
