Highlights from Robey Memorial Library’s Summer Reading Program ...

“Imagine Your Story” Summer Reading Program (SRP) 2020 at Robey Memorial Library in Waukon has come to an end. A simplified version of both the teen and kids Summer Reading Program was held due to COVID-19 allowing families to make as few as one trip into the library to participate.

The 4-Week Reading Challenge ran from July 6-August 1 with participants marking their reading and/or activities and play on an Activity Card. Kids, ages infant to sixth grade, had the choice of completing 1-10 spaces, 11-20 spaces or blacking out the Activity Card to receive weekly prizes in addition to adding their name to three different prize drawings for a Book-Movie-Plushy Combo, Magna Tiles Ice set, or Ice Cream with the Librarian. A total of 58 children registered, and 29 participated with a total of 792 activities completed.

Prize drawing winners from the Summer Reading Program are pictured above and include (left to right in first three submitted photos above) Thad Green - Book-Movie-Plushy Combo; Emma Berges - Ice Cream with the Librarian; and Asher Gerst - Magna Tiles Ice.  “Library Champion” signs were given to children to display at their homes and may have already been seen around town.

The Teen Summer Reading Program followed a similar pattern by counting completed reading related activities for weekly prizes and entry into a grand prize drawing. A total of nine teens registered and five participated with 121 activities completed. Winner of the grand prize drawing of $50 in Waukon Bucks was Alyssa Connelly (pictured at far right in the above submitted photos).

A new ongoing feature added in June at Robey Memorial Library was Grab & Go Activity Bags featuring simple projects for kids and teens to make at home and keep. To date, 212 bags have been distributed. This program continues through the end of the year with new activity bags available on the second Wednesday of each month.

Businesses and organizations that sponsored this year’s program included Hardee’s (food certificates), Builder’s First Source (lathe bundle) and Robey Memorial Library Foundation (Waukon Bucks). Ellen Krousie and Chris Kerndt attended State Library sponsored webinars in preparation for the Summer Reading Program.
