The Waukon volleyball team will benefit from the return of five players with varsity letterwinning experience from last fall’s squad that posted a 10-20 season record and will look to improve on a sixth-place Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) finish in both regular season and tournament play this season. That return of veteran experience will include a mix of each of the three grade levels eligible to return from previous varsity action, including four with multiple seasons of varsity contributions and one solid newcomer who began to make her mark last fall.

That mix of returning experience and this season’s contributing newcomers to the varsity level will look to both forge together while forging ahead through a season like no other that has already been tainted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The net Tribe’s 2020 competition schedule has already been trimmed to what will amount to about half of its match totals from previous seasons and will not include a single weekend tournament in an effort to avoid large gatherings of teams and fans at any one venue. Further mitigation measures both on and off the court for players and coaches to follow will add further challenges that will need to be followed in an effort to keep this season continuing at all in the midst of the ongoing pandemic.

A similar mix of limited experience and brand new contributions to the Waukon volleyball program will also be found in the top-end coaching level of the net Tribe’s totem pole this season, all while staying in the family. Amber and Rachell Adney will serve as co-head coaches for the Waukon volleyball program, with Rachell new to the Indian coaching ranks and Amber having served as an assistant coach for the Indians last season under the head coaching guidance of her sister, Angela Adney, who resigned from that helm after the past two seasons to pursue other interests.
