Waukon girls basketball team pulls out overtime victory, 44-42, at Riceville

The Waukon girls basketball team had just one game on its schedule this past week, but what a game it turned out to be. The Lady Indians traveled to Riceville Saturday, January 23 to take on a Wildcat team that held a 14-2 season record that included an eight-game win streak, with the Indians putting an end to that streak but needing an overtime period to do so, 44-42. Defense was the name of the game in this rare Saturday match-up, as the Indians were held to their lowest four-quarter point total of the season in playing to a 34-34 scoreboard knot at the end of regulation play, with the only other games where they were held to as few as 44 points total this season both being losses to Class 4A seventh-rated Waverly-Shell Rock.

Improving to a 10-3 overall record that includes a mark of 6-2 in Northeast Iowa Conference play, the Waukon basketball girls were scheduled to open this week with consecutive nights of basketball, hosting Clayton Ridge Monday, January 25 in a game rescheduled from December 7 and hosting New Hampton Tuesday, January 26 before traveling to Charles City Friday, January 29. The Lady Indians will then host Decorah Tuesday, February 2 and travel to Oelwein Friday, February 5 before playing at Waterloo West Saturday, February 6 and then hosting Jesup Tuesday, February 9 to wrap up their regular season schedule.
