Gus Herman

Gus Martin Herman passed away May 11, 2021 at the age of 88. He was born April 8, 1933 in Waukon to Gus and Edna Herman.

During high school, he excelled as an athlete on the Waukon basketball and football teams. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in Korea until 1954. He then attended the University of Dubuque.

After marrying Trudy in 1956, they moved to Denver, CO and Gus entered the education field as a teacher and administrator. Along with his wife and two daughters, he moved to the Jefferson County Outdoor Education school, where he served as principal and was influential in implementing the curriculum.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Evon Herman and Doris (Herman) Fish. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Nikki (Herman) Pothast of Chanhassen, MN and Koko Herman of Lakewood, CO; one granddaughter, Skyler (Pothast) Johnson; and two great-grandsons, Bennett and Tate Johnson of Victoria, MN; one nephew, Scott Fish of Waverly; and one niece, Roxann (Fish) Greenlee of Guysville, OH.

Gus and Trudy enjoyed camping and hiking in the mountains with their daughters. He loved working in his forest at their home in the foothills near Golden, CO, trimming trees and grooming the trails. His hobbies during retirement allowed him to enjoy connecting with people and “kibitzing”.  He spent his final days at his much-loved home.
