Letter to the Editor: Hinson fails to stand up for truth and democracy

To the Editor:

Like many Iowans, I was a “card-carrying Republican” raised in a Republican family. I left the party when it became the “trickle down” party for billionaires and corporations. No longer did this party value women, workers, or the middle class.

The once great Republican party has become that of unquestioning belief in the Big Lie that the 2020 election was fraudulent and stolen; and unwavering loyalty to Trump, the twice-impeached, two-time loser of the popular vote, who incited the January 6 attack on our nation’s capitol and on our democracy.

This was on full display this week when U.S. House Republicans voted to oust Rep. Liz Cheney from party leadership because she dared to speak the truth about the Big Lie and that of Trump undermining our  democracy by perpetuating this lie.

U.S.  Representative Ashley Hinson (Iowa) is one of those members trying to rewrite the history of January 6 to erase the former president’s culpability by voting to oust Rep. Liz Cheney.  Hinson lacks courage and conviction and is not fulfilling her oath to the U.S. Constitution.

I am a member of the Democratic Party because I believe we are all created equal and deserve a fair chance. Democrats support and respect our Constitution, unlike the Republicans who put loyalty to Trump first. Democrats defend our democracy and the right to vote. Democrats stand up for ordinary people and give them a voice. I invite you to join me in the Democratic Party as we continue to fight to preserve our democracy and our rights as Americans.

Sincerely,
Ann L. Hart
