Braxton Stewart is double champion, Tribe qualifies in all four field events
The Waukon boys track team was looking to extend any portion of its season that it could in competing at the Class 2A State Qualifying Meet at Jesup Thursday, May 13. Four of this season’s team members were able to accomplish that goal by qualifying six different events for this year’s State Track Meet, meeting either requirement of a top-two event finish at Thursday’s meet or turning in one of the next eight best non-top-two performances from any of the eight Class 2A State Qualifying Meets taking place that same evening.
The Indians managed five automatic State Meet qualifications with a pair of event championships and three runner-up finishes at Thursday’s meet, and then added another at-large finish as all meet results were sorted out the next morning to round out this season’s initial postseason advancements. Those top-end finishes helped lead the track Tribe to 95 team points and a runner-up team finish at this year’s State Qualifying Meet.
The four Indian State Meet qualifiers will now prepare to compete among Class 2A’s finest in their six events this Thursday-Saturday, May 20-22 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. Details of their season grand finale possibilities can be found on the Sports pages in the May 19, 2021 print edition and e-edition of The Standard..
