Senior slinger also finishes sixth in discus, Krambeer medals in long jump debut
The 2021 Iowa High School State Track Meet represented both some final hurrahs and a new beginning for the Waukon girls track team in its season grand finale competition that took place Thursday, May 20 and Friday, May 21 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. In the total of 10 track Tribe members who competed among Class 2A’s elite in seven different events, three of them were freshmen and five more were sophomores all competing in their first-ever State Track Meet and showing great promise for the program’s future, while this season’s two senior State Meet competitors, Maddy Waters and Annika Headington, had their final hurrah for both their multiple season grand finale appearances and their high school track and field careers, with no hurrah being any bigger than Headington finishing her tenure with a pair of medal-winning finishes that included reigning supreme as this season’s Class 2A Shot Put State Champion.
“I was very happy to have seven events qualify for the State Meet, especially considering the fact that last year’s season was canceled, and how young our squad was this year,” Waukon girls track coach Bob Wasson said. “It was very satisfying that Annika could bring home a State Championship in the shot and also place in the discus. Seven out of the eight girls running in our relays were ninth and 10th graders, so for them to be able to get State Track Meet experience this year will really help motivate and prepare them for next year.”
