Waukon girls softball team twice comes within one run of season’s first NEIC win, ends 2-4 week with road win and split of Classic pair

The Waukon softball team played to a 2-4 result in six games played this past week, getting its Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) season underway. That start to the NEIC campaign came within just a single run of the softball Tribe’s first NEIC wins since the 2019 season, as the Indians fell at New Hampton by just a 15-14 count Tuesday, June 1 before suffering a similar fate in being swept in an NEIC doubleheader at Waverly-Shell Rock by scores of 7-2 and 11-10. The Lady Indians ended the week posting a 7-2 win at South Winneshiek Friday, June 4 before splitting a pair of games at the North Fayette Valley Classic in West Union Saturday, June 5, falling to Union by a 4-3 final result in eight innings before defeating Turkey Valley by an 8-4 count.

Now holding an even 4-4 overall season record that includes a 0-3 start to the NEIC season, the Indian diamond dwellers were next scheduled to travel to Oelwein Monday, June 7 before hosting Decorah for a doubleheader Wednesday, June 9 and then playing in the Riceville Tournament Saturday, June 12. In a full slate next week, the softball Tribe will then play a doubleheader at Crestwood Monday, June 14, travel to North Fayette Valley Tuesday, June 15 and to Charles City Wednesday, June 16 before hosting New Hampton for a doubleheader Thursday, June 17 and playing at MFL/MarMac Friday, June 18.
