Waukon softball team ends streak of one-run losses, NEIC winless skid of two seasons with sweep of New Hampton during 3-4 week

Big contributions in three wins ... Waukon softball senior shortstop Annika Headington unloads on a pitch in the Indians’ home doubleheader sweep of New Hampton Thursday, June 17 that resulted in the softball Tribe’s first Northeast Iowa Conference wins since the 2019 season. Headington was a combined six-for-seven at the plate in those victories of 9-8 and 12-11, scoring four runs and driving in one. She followed up that big night with another memorable performance the following night in the Indians’ 4-1 win at MFL/MarMac Friday, June 18, collecting three hits in four at-bats that included a solo homerun that marked the 18th round-tripper of her Waukon softball career, breaking the career record previously held by 2004 Waukon High School graduate Tami Magner. Senior Annika Headington breaks career homerun record with solo shot at MFL

A 3-4 win-loss result for the Waukon softball team this past week meant much more than just a nearly average week, as a 0-4 start to the week turned into the Tribe’s longest winning streak of the season that included its first Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) wins in two years and some homerun history. The Indians began the week with three consecutive one-run losses, 2-1 and 3-2 at Crestwood Monday, June 14 and a 5-4 trip-up at North Fayette Valley Tuesday, June 15, before suffering a 12-2 loss in six innings at Charles City Wednesday, June 16. The tide began to turn for the Tribe Thursday, June 17 with a pair of walk-off, one-run triumphs at home over New Hampton, 9-8 and 12-11, for Waukon’s first NEIC wins since 2019 before the Indians finished off their week with a third consecutive win, a 4-1 victory at MFL/MarMac that saw Waukon senior Annika Headington crush her 18th career homerun to break the school record set by Tami Magner back in her senior season in 2004.

Now holding a 9-12 overall season record that includes a 2-9 NEIC mark, the softball Tribe was next scheduled to host Waverly-Shell Rock Monday, June 21 and Oelwein for a doubleheader Wednesday, June 23 before playing at Decorah Thursday, June 24, a doubleheader at home against Charles City Friday, June 25 rescheduled from May 27 and in the Decorah Tournament Saturday, June 26. The Lady Indians will then play at Central Elkader Monday, June 28 before hosting Crestwood Thursday, July 1 to wrap up their regular season.
