Elsa Hager

Elsa M. Hager, 90, of Waukon died Monday, August 30, 2021 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Thursday, September 2 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon with Rev. Cathy Jurgens officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Memorials can be made to Oakland Cemetery for fence repair, c/o Diane Oesterle, 1031 Maud Road, Waukon, IA 52172.

Elsa Mae Hager was born December 30, 1930 in Waukon, the daughter of Albert and Margaret (Helming) Bahr. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon and graduated from Waukon High School in 1948.

September 2, 1951, she married Keith Hager at Zion United Church of Christ. In 1948, Elsa went to work at the Allamakee County Courthouse and held various positions including Allamakee County Treasurer from 1972 until she retired in 1994.

She was a lifelong member of Zion United Church of Christ, where she was very active in the women’s fellowship and served on several other committees. Elsa enjoyed quilting, crocheting, taking tours on the back roads of Allamakee County, spending time with her family at the campground and cooking.

She and her lifetime friend and travel partner, Bernita Havelick, enjoyed traveling throughout the United States. Elsa always looked forward to her coffee group that got together Wednesdays and Saturdays for over the past 55 years.

Survivors include her two sons, Donn (Nancy) Hager of Caledonia, MN and Bob (Kristi) Hager of Waukon; five grandchildren: Shannon (Jeff) Staggemeier, Dusty (Kathy) Hager, Aubree (Chris) Peterman, and Alyssa and Alaina Hager; six great-grandchildren: Carson and Bentley Hager, Grayson and Renner Staggemeier, and Kaden and Kinley Peterman; a brother-in-law, Ernie (Donna) Lubahn of Waukon; a sister-in-law, Bonnie Hager of Waukon; an honorary daughter, Jane Regan of Harpers Ferry; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Keith, who died in 1983; her son, Steve, who died in 2010; two brothers, Donald (Elaine) Bahr and Charles “Chic” (Helen) Bahr; her father- and mother-in-law, Ed and Elsie Hager; her brother-in-law, James Hager; and two nephews, Michael Hager and Dennis “Borgie” Bahr.
