Richard "Lee" HInkel

Richard “Lee” Hinkel passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at Good Samaritan Society in Waukon, surrounded by his wife, Kymm, and his daughters, Sarah and Brooke. Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 21 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon from 9:30-11 a.m. Funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. following the visitation, with Fr. John Moser officiating. There will be a celebration of life at Green Valley Getaway in Waukon following the service.

Lee was born April 8, 1949 to Richard and Kathryn Hinkel of Marquette. After graduating from MarMac High School in 1967, he joined the Navy. He then attended Upper Iowa University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree and taught at MarMac Schools in McGregor. He also coached girls varsity basketball and softball and was named Upper Mississippi Valley Conference Coach of the Year his last two years of coaching.

He played softball sponsored by Starks out of Prairie du Chien, WI for several years, winning many tournaments. Following his teaching years, the family moved to Colorado for 11 years, where he worked for Thermal Systems. The family then returned to Waukon in 1991, where he worked for Heartland Windows until 2012, when he retired. He enjoyed his retirement playing golf and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Kymm; his son, Eric Hinkel; his daughter, Sarah (Drew) Hager; his daughter, Brooke (Steve) Weighner; eight grandchildren: Kylee, Jaden and Noah Hager, and Gabriel, Isaac, Elijah, Laila and Jeremiah Weighner; along with many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Bruce.

Pallbearers will be Steve Weighner and Drew Hager. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
