Waukon football team wraps up non-district schedule with 42-6 road win over fellow NEIC squad Crestwood

The Waukon football team wrapped up its non-district schedule in convincing fashion Friday, September 10 when the grid Tribe traveled to Crestwood to face a third consecutive fellow Northeast Iowa Conference opponent. Facing a Cadet team yet to win a game this season and giving up more than 40 points per game in their first two contests of the season, the grid Indians continued both those trends for the host squad in dealing Crestwood a 42-6 defeat.

“The biggest thing coming out of the non-district schedule is players learning to play together,” Waukon football coach Chad Beermann said of his team’s continued improvement in non-district play that peaked in this final non-league contest. “We are gaining confidence, and the kids are just starting to see what they are capable of.”

A career night of 220 yards rushing for senior Pat Hennessy yielded three touchdowns and an average of 24.4 yards per carry on just nine attempts while fueling the Indians’ effort of 393 total yards of offense in the contest.

The Indians will next open their Class 2A District 4 schedule this Friday, September 17 hosting North Fayette Valley in a Homecoming match-up. The TigerHawks are undefeated through non-district play with three victories over Class 1A or smaller schools to start the 2021 season, including a 64-0 win at Postville this past Friday, September 10.

“North Fayette Valley will be coming in undefeated, and likely with a state rating,” Coach Beermann of his team’s next opponent. “They have played great defense, only giving up a total of six points in their first three games. They continue to run their Wing-T, as they have since 1986, but will mix in some spread. I am sure they will have some wrinkles to throw at us.”

Kick-off Friday is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. with the freshmen opening the action at 5 p.m. The grid Tribe will then hit the road once again for a Friday, September 24 Class 2A District 4 clash at Oelwein.
