Kee football improves to 4-0 with 68-0 road rout of Calamus-Wheatland

by Perry Hesse

The Kee football team kept its perfect 2021 season intact thus far with a rout of Calamus-Wheatland in a game played at Midland High School Friday, September 17, dealing the Eight-Player newcomer Warriors a 68-0 shut-out. The Hawks scored nine touchdowns on the night, including one from the defense, on the way to 372 yards of total offense while limiting the Warriors to just 82 total yards.

“We executed the way we needed to, both offensively and defensively,” said Kee football head coach Chad Winters. “We were dominant on both sides of the ball and that led to lots of explosive plays on offense and tackles for loss on defense. We talk about finishing games completely, and we were able to do that.”

Kee wasted no time scoring, as senior Tyson Cota hauled in a 65-yard touchdown pass on the game’s first play. Damon Weber added the conversion run, and the senior quarterback would attempt just three passes on the night with two going for scores.

Kee will be celebrating its Homecoming this week as Central Elkader visits Friday, September 24. The Warriors sport an even 2-2 record after a 44-16 loss to Edgewood-Colesburg last Friday and also own a 76-31 victory over the same Calamus-Wheatland team the Hawks just played. Kick-off this Friday night will be at 7 p.m.

“We have a big week coming up with Homecoming and Central Elkader,” added Coach Winters. “This game will set the tone for the last half of the season.” A Homecoming win this week would improve the Hawks’ Eight-Player District 5 mark to 4-0 and guarantee them no lower than a fourth-place finish in that eight-team district, as they would have beaten all the other four teams in the district who would also have at least three district losses at that point in the season. Although yet undefeated in District 5 play, the Hawks’ final three games of the season are against the other “top-half” teams in the district, including the other two teams yet undefeated in District 5 play, Edgewood-Colesburg and top-five rated Easton Valley, the only other District 5 team yet unbeaten on the entire season.

With the top three teams from each Eight-Player district automatically qualifying for this year’s State Play-Offs, the Hawks will wrap up their regular season traveling to Edgewood-Colesburg (3-1 overall, 3-0 in District 5) October 1 and then to Midland (2-3 overall, 2-1 in District 5) October 8, before hosting Easton Valley (4-0 overall, 3-0 in District 5) October 15.
