Walter Engrav

Walter A. Engrav, 86, of Waukon died Thursday, September 30, 2021 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, October 6 at 1 p.m. at Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon, with Pastor Bryan Robertson officiating. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home Wednesday.

Walter Alfred Engrav was born November 26, 1934 in Neosho, MO, the son of Walter and Mildred (Dahly) Engrav. He and his family moved to Minnesota when he was a toddler. Walter attended school in Preston, MN and Harmony, MN, where he enjoyed playing football, lettering his freshman year. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1952 until 1955, serving during the Korean War as an Airman 1st class aviation ordinance, and he earned his GED.

May 24, 1955, he married Betty Ann Selin in Viroqua, WI. After they were married, they moved to Marion and he went to work for Quaker Oats in Cedar Rapids, where he served as the vice president of the union. In 1967, he went to work for Tri-State Breeders (Accelerated Genetics) until 2004, when he retired. They lived in Decorah, Richland Center, WI and Waukon before settling in Pea Rock Ridge, AR. They moved back to Waukon in July of 2021.

Walter enjoyed spending time in the outdoors and loved fishing and hunting. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and Green Bay Packer fan. Church was very important to him, he had a strong faith in God. Walter held many positions in the church and taught Sunday School there for 30 years.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Engrav of Waukon; his four children: Rhonda (David) Bahr, Colleen Wicks and Steve (friend Kathy Fahey) Engrav, all of Waukon, and Robert (Mikki) Engrav of Batesville, AR; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Jeff Thornton of Columbia, TN; three brothers: Roger Engrav of St. Louis, MO, Richard (Edna) Engrav of Copperas Cove, TX and Curtis Snitker of Lansing; two sisters-in-law, Lois Selin of Viroqua, WI and Diane Amann of Winona, MN; two brothers-in-law, Ronnie Amann of Viroqua, WI and Ronald Tollackson of Westby, WI; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Patty Thornton; a daughter-in-law, Mary Engrav; a grandson, Kevin Bulman; two step-fathers, Art Snitker and Clarence Carroll; a brother, Francis Engrav; and a brother in infancy, Robert Engrav.

Honorary casketbearers are Walter’s grandchildren.
