Waukon volleyball team sweeps MFL/MarMac, nearly upsets Class 4A ranked Decorah, battles hard at Columbus Tourney

Pounding out a “Think Pink” point ... Waukon volleyball junior McKenzie Lier hammers down a kill in the Indians’ five-set near-upset of Class 4A 14th-rated Decorah at home Tuesday, September 28. Perhaps inspired by her own mother’s recent battle with breast cancer (see Pages 19-22) on this “Think Pink” Night in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness, Lier swatted out three kills and recorded two each of solo blocks, assisted blocks and digs in the match. The Waukon volleyball team played through one of its busiest weeks of the season, with that busyness both starting and ending the week. The net Tribe hosted a pair of matches on back-to-back nights to start the week, recording outcomes on differing ends of the spectrum with a home sweep of MFL/MarMac in three sets, 27-25, 25-9 and 25-14, Monday, September 27 before battling Class 4A 14th-rated Decorah to the very brink of an upset Tuesday, September 28, taking the first two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-21 before having the final three get away from them, 18-25, 19-25 and 11-15.

The volleyball Indians wrapped up their week at the Waterloo Columbus Tournament Saturday, October 2, playing four matches in a combination of pool play and consolation bracket competition, falling by narrow margins in all four. The net Tribe’s pool play matches ended up with three initial losses by no more than six points in two sets each, the Indians first falling to the host school, 22-24 and 15-21, to Don Bosco, 19-21 and 18-21, and to North Tama, 16-21 and 21-23, before suffering that same fate in the first round of consolation play, 16-25 and 18-25 to Independence, to have their tournament day ended.

The busy past week left the Indians’ season record at 13-13 overall, including a now 2-2 mark in Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) play. The Indians were next scheduled to play at New Hampton Tuesday, October 5 and at Dunkerton Monday, October 11.
