Jaguars “Kruse” to victory behind 229 yards rushing, 239 yards passing by SE Valley quarterback

The old saying goes, “all good things must come to an end,” and when they do it oftentimes takes a strong counter effort to force that end. Unfortunately, the Waukon football team found that out the hard way when the Indians suffered a 50-14 loss to another squad with a 10-1 record, Southeast Valley, in a Class 2A State Semifinals match-up in the UNI-Dome at Cedar Falls Saturday, November 13 to have their very good 2021 campaign brought to an end.

“Some days, things just don’t go your way,” Waukon football coach Chad Beermann said. “How you respond in those situations shows who you are. The kids continued to fight, and accounted for over 300 yards of offense against a very good defense.”

That strong counter effort that helped end the Indians’ 2021 campaign came in the form of 509 total yards from a balanced Southeast Valley (SEV) offensive attack that featured 468 yards and all seven of the Jaguars’ touchdowns coming from their senior quarterback, Kolson Kruse. He ran for 229 yards and five touchdowns on 35 of SEV’s 45 carries in the ballgame and completed 12 of his 17 pass attempts for 239 yards and the two other Jaguar tallies.

On the other side of the Class 2A State Play-Off Semifinals bracket, West Lyon defeated Williamsburg by a 20-14 result in overtime. With its victory over the Indians, Southeast Valley will now venture to its first State Championship game in program history, playing for the Class 2A title this Friday, November 19 at 10 a.m. against West Lyon, Inwood, a team that has played in eight State Championship games and won five State titles, including a most recent Class 1A State Championship in 2019.
