Many things describe the middle school years. Perfect probably isn’t one of them. Readers discover something closer to reality in The Worry Knot, a debut middle grade novel penned by Minnesota children’s author and Waterville native Mary Evanson Bleckwehl.

Hazard Middle School, where worry and dessert are always on the menu, is the setting for most of the story. It’s where twelve year-old Rourke Berger learns that trying to keep his worries at bay and his autistic brother safe isn’t an easy task. Following the success of her three picture books and a children’s cookbook, Bleckwehl has written a fictional story for older readers - one of heart, hope and an unlikely hero.

Bleckwehl describes her debut novel, published by Immortal Works Press, as a mash-up of middle school angst and brotherly love. “This story is about an anxious boy who heads off to the roller coaster ride called middle school with worry in his gut, high hopes of fitting in, and an imaginary friend to help him cope. But the real heart of it lies in the compassion this young boy has for his vulnerable brother,” Bleckwehl shares.

She further points out that although the story was written for the ‘tween audience, ages 10 and above, it’s a great read for adults too. “Think of all the crazy things that happen in middle school!” she explains. “Sweaty gym teachers, trips to the principal’s office, and your first boy-girl party… The Worry Knot has many relatable layers for readers, from heart-breaking scenes to laugh-out-loud humor.”

Kirkus Review calls The Worry Knot “a kind and realistic depiction of living with autism that will educate and engage young readers.” Children’s author Diane Davies says Bleckwehl’s debut is a must read: “Bleckwehl’s remarkable talent brings us to the realization that an individual least expected to contribute can make an extraordinary contribution to begin to untie the worry knot.”

Bleckwehl, a 1973 graduate of Waukon High School, has a Masters Degree in Educational Management from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Wartburg College in Waverly. She lives in Northfield, MN, where she’s been an educator and together with her husband has raised three children. She is the daughter of the late Melbourne and Helen Evanson.

She stays in touch with the reading and writing delights of children by conducting school author visits throughout the Midwest, including past visits to Waukon, Waterville and New Albin schools. More information is available at marybleckwehl.com.
