Janet J. Bray, 89, of Waukon, formerly of Brownsville, MN, died Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 29 at 1 p.m. at Center Baptist Church in rural Lansing with Pastor Matthew Majewski officiating and with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may greet the family from 12 p.m. until the time of services Friday at the church. Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon is handling arrangements.

Janet Joan Bray was born March 25, 1933 on her parents’ farm in rural Waterville, the daughter of Charles John and Evelyn Harriet (Johnson) Anderson. After graduating from Waukon High School (where she was the Homecoming queen), she worked as a telephone operator. In 1952, Janet married her high school sweetheart, Myron Bray, at Center Baptist Church in rural Lansing.

While raising their children, Janet worked the night shift as a CNA at the Good Samaritan Society in Waukon. She also worked the register at Hager’s Grocery and waitressed at the Purple Cow. In the early 1970s, she and Myron moved to La Crescent, MN and started Bray Pest Control, which they owned for about 20 years. Janet also worked at Valley View Mall and Gundersen Medical Center in La Crosse, WI. After Myron died in 1998, Janet moved to Brownsville, MN and then to La Crosse, WI before returning to Waukon.

Janet was the epitome of the 1950s homemaker: very polite and proper and everything about her and her home was perfect, from her hair and make-up to making sure her home was always guest-ready. If unexpected visitors dropped in during dinner, she made sure to set a place for them at the table, often at the expense of her not getting to eat a hot meal.

An incredible baker and cook, her apple pies and apple crisps were often requested. Janet was a great seamstress and made clothes, bridal gowns, and was a tailor for B&B Clothing in Waukon. She also liked knitting and made many afghan blankets.

As a member of Center Baptist Church, she participated in the ladies’ circles, and also enjoyed attending her children’s and grandchildren’s activities. Janet enjoyed reading, especially non-fiction and inspirational books. She loved watching football as well and followed the Minnesota Vikings with her sons.

Janet is survived by her children: Joann (Duane) Leppert of rural Lansing, Robert (Pam) Bray of Preston, MN, Alan Bray of La Crescent, MN and Paul (Christine) Bray of Brownsville, MN; 16 grandchildren: Christopher (Lisa) and Shawn (Dawn) Leppert, Jenny (Brian) Carson, Stacie (Andy) Hill, Molly (Zach) Stemo, Kelly (Gabe) Sweet, Jesse, Chelsie, Mitchell, Abbie and Levi Bray, Lindsey (Clint) Rohrer, Andrew (Erica) and Glen (Jocelyn) Bray, Kenny Baumgartner and Emma Bray; numerous great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth (John) Hartley of Postville and Mary (Frank) Regan of Waukon; a brother, Warren “Tom” (Cheryl) Anderson of Cumming; a sister-in-law, Lois Anderson of Cedar Rapids; and two brothers-in-law, Donald Aldrich and Jim Evans, both of Waukon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Myron; her son, Rodney Bray; a brother, C. John Anderson, a sister, Lois Aldrich; and a sister-in-law, Lana Anderson.

Honorary casketbearers are Janet’s granddaughters, and her grandsons will serve as casketbearers.
