Dr. Kristina Thompson joined the Veterans Memorial Hospital medical staff May 2, providing podiatry care to northeast Iowa. She is also a wound care specialist and diabetes educator.  She has been practicing podiatry for over seven years and states she is excited to join the VMH team.

“I am excited to join VMH to deliver specialty care to the people of northeast Iowa. Working in a small hospital offers opportunities to collaborate closely with primary care providers to help patients reach their goals,” states Dr. Thompson. “I treat full scope foot and ankle as well as perform minor surgical procedures. I have a special passion for wound care and diabetic education. I emphasize building a trusting relationship with my patients and believe in patient autonomy to find a plan which will fit with their lifestyle.”

Dr. Thompson is originally from Monona and is an MFL MarMac graduate. She attended the University of Northern Iowa where she studied biology and chemistry, then studied Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at Des Moines University.  Following her graduation, she completed a three-year residency in St. Louis at SSM DePaul Health. She has been practicing podiatry at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien for the last five years. She is board certified in Podiatric Medicine and Wound Care.

Dr. Thompson will join Dr. Greg Valkosky of Gundersen Health who also visits Waukon seeing patients in the Gundersen Waukon Clinic and performing podiatry surgical procedures at VMH.

“I look forward to working with Dr. Valkosky in offering the area very comprehensive podiatric medicine,” adds Dr. Thompson. “My passion is wound care and the feet can have very serious complications from wounds or diabetes. Being able to manage those circumstances successfully for my patients to be able to be as mobile as possible is my goal.”

Dr. Thompson resides in Monona with her husband and three children who all enjoy their two cats and laying hens. She also enjoys walking, gardening, cooking, baking and homeschooling her children.

“I am so happy to have this opportunity in a part-time position, allowing me to have a better work-life balance. I am excited to serve the people of northeast Iowa, yet still be present with my three young children.”
