Pair of seventh-inning rallies not quite enough as Waukon baseball team wins one of four games during opening week

Beats him to the bag ... Waukon baseball junior second baseman Nathan O’Neill dives to tag the bag before this Waverly-Shell Rock baserunner can reach in the Indians’ home Northeast Iowa Conference doubleheader with the Go-Hawks Thursday, May 26. In addition to his defensive plays, O’Neill also popped a pair of singles, scored a run and pitched three combined innings in both ballgames, giving up just one hit and no earned runs.

The Waukon baseball team put together some late-inning rally excitement on a couple occasions in its opening week of four games, but ultimately came away with a 1-3 start to the season. That lone win came in the Tribe’s season opener at Clayton Ridge, 10-0, Monday, May 23 and was followed by the first of those rallies that came up just a bit short in a 5-4 home loss to North Fayette Valley Tuesday, May 24. The Indians wrapped up the week with a home Northeast Iowa Conference doubleheader with Waverly-Shell Rock, having another rally be full denied in game one, a 9-5 defeat in eight innings, before also suffering a 6-1 loss.

The baseball Tribe was next scheduled to play another Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) varsity doubleheader at Decorah Tuesday, May 31 before traveling to Sumner-Fredericksburg Thursday, June 2 and playing yet another varsity NEIC doubleheader at Charles City Friday, June 3. The Indians are then scheduled for a full slate of four home dates that include June 6 and 7 varsity doubleheaders with Turkey Valley and Crestwood, respectively, before hosting Union June 8 and another NEIC doubleheader against New Hampton Friday, June 10.
