Historical Society makes note of summer open hours, closing of Courthouse Museum for remodeling

The Allamakee County Historical Society has announced its summer schedules for its various facilities located in Waukon. The greatest change of note for this summer is that the Allamakee County Courthouse Museum, the large museum located at the very north of the second block of Allamakee Street - across the street from current Allamakee County Courthouse, will be closed throughout this entire summer for a remodeling project.

In conjunction with that museum closure, the Genealogy Research Center that was located on the lower level of that Courthouse Museum has been relocated to the lower level of the former Vet’s Club, which now houses the Allamakee County Veterans Museum. That Genealogy Research Center will be open to the public starting July 12 of this year, and will be open from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. each Wednesday through Friday from that July 12 date on through the month of August.

The Allamakee County Veterans Museum located in the upper level of the former Vet’s Club in the middle of that second block of Allamakee Street will be open Fridays and Saturdays during the months of June through August. The open hours for those days will include each Friday from 12-4 p.m. and each Saturday from 9 a.m.-12 noon. There are also plans to have two monthly programs throughout the summer at the Veterans Museum, and tours can also be scheduled outside of the open hours. Follow the museum on Facebook at Allamakee County Veterans Museum for further details on upcoming events.

The Red School at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds in Waukon will also be open during this year’s Allamakee County Fair, which is scheduled for July 19-23 this year. Visitors can see the desks, library, the drinking cups with the student’s names on them, and much more, with displays being original to the school the way it was the last day of school in that particular building.
