April is Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month. Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. The symptoms can vary widely from one person to the next. While some may experience tremors as their primary symptom, others might face more challenges with balance or coordination.

The vast majority of individuals with Parkinson’s, approximately 90%, experience some speech or voice challenges that can make conversations difficult, leading many to speak less often. Anyone who is, or who knows someone who is, living with Parkinson’s disease, there is hope for better communication. The Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) available at Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) may be just what is needed.
LSVT is an intensive daily therapy program that lasts for four weeks. It’s unique in that it’s the only behavioral therapy specifically for Parkinson’s that has been shown to produce lasting improvements years after treatment. LSVT is designed to help individuals with Parkinson’s regain their voice and confidence.
