Good Samaritan Society-Waukon to focus on fall prevention for seniors as its Founders Day Service Project

Part of Good Samaritan Society Founders Day Service Project... The Wall Outlet Nightlight pictured above provides automatic light when needed most and does so while still leaving the two outlet plug-ins free for their intended use. The Wall Outlet Nightlight is available to any seniors over the age of 65 who still live at home in Allamakee County through this year’s Good Samaritan Society-Waukon Founders Day Service Project Submitted photo.

Seeking homes to receive safety interventions

For many aging adults, the risk of falling and not knowing how long they can stay in their homes are common concerns. More than one-third of seniors over age 65 fall each year and falls account for 25 percent of all hospital admissions and 40 percent of all rehab/skilled care admissions, according to statistical reports.

Many falls could be avoided with something as simple as better lighting, removal of trip hazards or the addition of a grab bar. The Good Samaritan Society wants to help change those statistics and help seniors in the local community live in their homes longer, and the Society’s Founders Day Service Project can be a means to do just that.

Butterflies enhance Main Street in Lansing

Enhancing Main Street in Lansing ... Our Savior Lutheran Church in Lansing has been making large wooden butterflies that have been painted and decorated by the youth and other members of the congregation over the last several weeks (pictured below). The painted butterflies have been placed in the decorative flowerpots in downtown Lansing to help enhance Main Street, such as those pictured above that represent just some of the inspiring creativity. Submitted photos.

by Susan Cantine-Maxson

Giant butterflies have been hovering over the potted flowers on Lansing’s Main Street. Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Lansing has created a public art project which they are sharing with the residents and visitors to town. Children and adults have met for several weeks to paint the large wooden butterflies.

Pastor Laura Gentry, an artist as well as the church’s pastor, conceived of the idea and brought the congregation on board to create a public art project which engages people. Many of the butterflies are both motivational and beautiful since they have positive phrases or biblical encouragements on them. The participants have created 19 butterflies to be  displayed in each of the  flowerpots of the downtown district.
