Waterville native publishes third children's book; set to visit elementary alma mater February 26

Mary Evanson Bleckwehl ...

The phrase "laughter is the best medicine" is played out in a new picture book by Waterville native and Minnesota author Mary Evanson Bleckwehl. Following the success of her first two award-winning children’s books, the daughter of the late Melbourne and Helen Evanson of Waterville has now written "Claire’s Hair," just released from Beaver’s Pond Press.

In the new book, Claire loves her tangled tresses where little critters romp and live, and wants nothing to do with her mother’s insistence to comb, wash or cut it. In fact, her hair is a source of giggling delight for Claire and her best friend until he gets sick and the laughter goes missing. Claire looks beyond herself and together with her “big hairy idea” finds a way to bring the laughter back.

ISUEO-Allamakee County hosted Postville Clover Kids ...

Playing the piano with bananas, or the bongos with carrots, or Pac Man with play dough are just some of the things Postville Clover Kids learned about the magic of the Makey Makey and turning everyday items into a keyboard. The Makey Makey is a circuit board that uses alligator clips to send electrical signals to the computer. Anything that can conduct electricity can be connected to the clips, such as bananas, carrots, play dough, and even people. The Clover Kids substituted these items for the four arrow keys, space bar and click on the computer. Once they were grounded to the Makey Makey, they used different apps, such as the piano, to learn how electricity flows. The most important lesson was being “grounded” and holding the specific alligator clip or touching that person. The Clover Kids also made their own marshmallow shooters out of craft sticks. Marshmallows were sent flying to see who could launch the farthest.
