Allamakee Scholarship Fund, Inc. Phone-A-Thon set for February 16, 18, 23

The 2015-2016 Allamakee Scholarship Fund, Inc. (formerly Allamakee Dollars for Scholars) phone-a-thon to be held in February is the major fundraiser for the organization and is conducted by the student applicants in conjunction with the Allamakee Scholarship Fund, Inc. Board of Directors. Students use phone banks at Waukon High School and Waterville Elementary School and at Waukon State Bank and Farmers and Merchants Savings Bank in Waukon. Phone-a-thon dates this year are Tuesday, February 16, Thursday, February 18 and Tuesday, February 23.

NICC promoting "Broke, Busted and Disgusted" documentary focused on the cost of higher education

Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) is promoting a new documentary, "Broke, Busted and Disgusted," that informs and educates students and their parents on the student loan debt crisis in the U.S. and the costs of attending college.
In the new documentary, a group of Iowa filmmakers examine higher education and the true costs of college. The Iowa Credit Union Foundation (ICUF) and a number of Iowa credit unions have partnered with the co-creator of the film, Adam Carroll, also a financial literacy expert, to help combat student loan debt in Iowa.

Selected for NEIBA Honor Band ...

Waukon Middle School eighth grade students Owen and Sophie Halverson (left to right in above photo) participated in the NEIBA (Northeast Iowa Bandmasters Association) Honor Band in Oelwein Saturday, December 5 along with over 200 other students from northeast Iowa. "This is a very select group," said Frank Knoll, director of instrumental music at the middle school and elementary levels in the Allamakee Community School District. "They practiced all day and then performed a concert in the evening for a very packed gymnasium. Both students worked very hard to prepare for this event and represented our school very well." Kee High School Speech to host Dinner Theatre February 13

The Kee High School Speech Department will be hosting its annual Dinner Theatre Saturday, February 13, giving the general public an opportunity to see the Kee Speech Team's large group performances, as well as a sneak peek at Kee High School's Spring Musical. The event is being held at T.J. Hunter's Ballroom in Lansing, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. and serving of the meal beginning at 6 p.m. with the performances to follow.
  The buffet meal consists of beef brisket and BBQ chicken, cheesy potatoes, corn, Oreo fluff and dinner roll, with drink and a dessert bar. Tickets must be purchased in advance from a Kee speech student or from the Kee High School office. The event is co-sponsored by Kerndt Brothers Savings Bank and New Albin Savings Bank.

Waukon, Kee Speech programs advance performances to State Contest this Saturday

The Kee and Waukon High School Speech Departments have each advanced several teams to the State Large Group Speech Contest to be hosted this Saturday, February 6 by Waterloo West High School. The qualifying teams each earned a I rating at the District Speech competition held Saturday, January 23 at Waukon High School.

St. Patrick School Mardi Gras is this Saturday

St. Patrick School in Waukon will be holding its annual Mardi Gras fundraising event this Saturday, January 30 at the Waukon Banquet Center. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Among the events taking place will be live and silent auctions for items such as those pictured above. There will also be a raffle for an iPad bundle. Local businesses and individuals have donated items and funds to help make the event a success for St. Patrick School. Plays in NEIBA Honor Jazz Band

Saturday, January 9, Waukon High School Band member Adam Gruman attended the Northeast Iowa Bandmasters Association Honor Jazz Band in Cedar Rapids as a member of the 1A/2A/3A band on trap set. Gruman is the first student from Waukon High School selected to participate in this ensemble. He spent the day rehearsing with only 18 other students from northeast Iowa. The band was directed by Steve Shanley, director of the Coe College Jazz Bands, who is pictured above (at left) with Gruman.
