Honored for sportsmanship

Ann Delaney (far right) of Lansing was honored prior to the Kee girls basketball team’s first-round Class 1A State Tournament game Monday, February 29 by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and the Iowa Farm Bureau for being a “model of sportsmanship” for Kee High School and its community. Prior to the start of each first-round game at the Iowa High School Girls State Basketball Tournament, a fan supporting each participating team is honored after being nominated by their respective school. Along with each honored fan receiving a certificate, each represented high school also receives a $250 award to its scholarship fund in the name of the honored fan. Delaney is pictured above with her honored fan counterpart from Burlington-Notre Dame and Iowa High School Girls Athletic Union Senior Associate Director Karon Brown.

Waukon boys basketball team plays to 12-10 season

For the second consecutive season the Waukon boys basketball team posted an imbalance on the more favorable side of its season record, compiling a 12-10 overall record. That overall mark included a 7-5 effort that placed the Indians in third place in the final Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) standings.
“We had a winning record for the second season in a row, which hasn’t happened since the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 seasons,” Waukon boys basketball coach Jed Hemann said. “Our younger levels had some solid records as well. We had a strong senior class, but we will also return five letterwinners next season and our expectations will be for us to be even better next season.”

Down in a day

The Makee Manor location just north of Waukon on Highway 9 had the latest chapter of its history completed Monday, February 15 to make way for its next installment. The Makee Manor building that had first been constructed as part of the most recent facility in 1935, was expanded in 1976 and remodeled in 1997 was torn down Monday in preparation for construction of the new Allamakee County Public Safety Center. Quad County Excavating, owned and operated by Frank Mahr and Reggie Berns, took to the task of tearing down the brick structure early that President’s Day morning and had the building reduced to rubble by late afternoon. Allamakee County Sheriff Clark Mellick said demolition of the building was anticipated to take part over two days but went smoothly enough to be completed in a day.
