Waukon girls golf team edges Waverly-Shell Rock at home, powers past MFL

The Waukon girls golf team played another pair of back-to-back meets this past week and put both of them in the win column, including the golf Tribe’s first Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) win of the season. That NEIC triumph came by just two strokes, 222-224, over Waverly-Shell Rock at home Monday, April 8 before the Indians completed the consecutive night sweep with a 213-277 win over MFL/MarMac at Tri-City Golf Course in Luana Tuesday, April 9.

“We are working hard for team consistency and scores are coming down,” Waukon girls golf coach Kathy McMillan said. “Good team chemistry and practicing for a purpose makes a positive end result.”
The Indians were next scheduled to play three consecutive meets on the road, traveling to Decorah Monday, April 15, to Caledonia, MN Tuesday, April 16 and then to Sumner-Fredericksburg Thursday, April 18. The golf Tribe will then host Crestwood Monday, April 22 and then New Hampton Friday, April 26.

Kee girls track team finishes fourth at Starmont, wins Waukon Early Bird

The two teamed up with senior Makayla Walleser and sophomore Jada Mitchell to win the 4x400 relay in a time of 4:25.79 and equaled that feat in the distance medley teaming up with the freshman pair of Reagan Mudderman and Haley Meyer for a clocking of 4:42.50. The two also swept the top end of the 800 meter run in respective times of 2:34.83 and 2:40.60, with Brennan adding another victory in the 3000 meter run in 11:37.80. Despite the weather in the second half of the week being far from conducive, the Kee girls track team was still able to get in two meets this past week, those competitions coming on back-to-back nights to start the week. The Lady Hawks first claimed a fourth-place finish at the Starmont Invitational held Monday, April 8 after being postponed from Thursday, April 4, but then turned up their intensity to win the Early Bird Invitational hosted by Waukon Tuesday, April 9.

Family of Bob Heffern establishes “Get Your Rear in Gear” Memorial Scholarship for Wellness Center membership

The Waukon Wellness Center, together with the family of Bob Heffern, is happy to sponsor a scholarship opportunity in his memory that will be distributed to an individual (or individuals) 62 years of age or older who exemplify the qualities and ideals of Bob Heffern and his perseverance and dedication to wellness. The scholarship will be presented as a one-year membership to the Waukon Wellness Center.

Individuals may apply on behalf of themselves and/or may also nominate an individual whom they believe would benefit from, and utilize, a membership to the Waukon Wellness Center. Applications should be submitted to the Waukon Wellness Center no later than April 30 of this year.

Waukon girls golf team defeats South Winneshiek at home, falls at Charles City

The Waukon girls golf team got its 2019 season underway with back-to-back nights of competition, the golf Tribe splitting that season-opening pair. After opening the season with a 226-270 win at home over South Winneshiek Monday, April 1, the Lady Indians were dealt their season’s first loss, 227-220, at Charles City Tuesday, April 2.

The Indians were next scheduled to host Waverly-Shell Rock Monday, April 8 before playing at MFL/MarMac Tuesday, April 9. A very busy week will then see the golf Tribe play three consecutive dates on the road, traveling to Decorah Monday, April 15, to Caledonia, MN Tuesday, April 16 and then to Sumner-Fredericksburg Thursday, April 18.

The Waukon boys golf team got its 2019 campaign underway, earning a split in its first two meets of the season on back-to-back nights. The golf Tribe began the season with a 178-189 victory at home over South Winneshiek Monday, April 1 before coming up shy in its first Northeast Iowa Conference meet, 178-168, vs. Charles City at home Tuesday, April 2.

The Indians were next scheduled to host both Waverly-Shell Rock and MFL/MarMac Tuesday, April 9. They will remain at home to start next week as well, hosting Decorah Monday, April 15 and Caledonia, MN Tuesday, April 16.

Kee boys track team places 10th at Ed-Co, claims fifth at Postville

The Kee boys track team got to experience its first outdoor competition of the 2019 season, finishing near the middle of the pack in a pair of invitational meets this past week. The Hawks claimed a 10th-place finish in the large Edgewood-Colesburg Invitational that took place Tuesday, April 2 before finishing fifth at Postville’s Foster-Kiesau Relays Friday, April 5, a day later than the meet’s original April 4 date due to cold, damp weather.

“We had two meets his week and I felt they were worthwhile,” Kee boys track coach Pat Wagner said. “The Ed-Co meet was a competitive meet, a lot of good small school track teams. At Postville, we showed a good deal of improvement. My hats off to the people at Postville; they ran a very efficient meet.  (Senior) Jacob Berns is off to an excellent start to the season. He had two first-place performances at the Foster-Kiesau relays in Postville.”

Waukon High School softball standout Holly Hesse achieves 800th career coaching victory

Former Waukon High School standout softball pitcher Holly Hesse continues to reach landmark achievements in her career coaching the game she loves. The 1977 graduate of Waukon High School most recently became the 30th NCAA Division I active head softball coach to achieve 800 career wins courtesy of a 3-2 Missouri Valley Conference victory at home for her Missouri State University Bears over the University of Northern Iowa Sunday, March 24.

Further heightening that milestone achievement is the manner in which it came, as that 3-2 victory arrived in walk-off fashion. Senior third baseman Kyana Mason was able to sprint home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie and further add to her head coach’s career achievements.

Waukon High School cheerleaders selected for All-Star Cheer Squad ...

The members of the Waukon High School cheerleading squad pictured above were chosen by the Iowa Cheer Coaches Association Board of Directors and All-Star Committee to perform as part of the 2019 Iowa All-Star Team, being selected to cheer at the Iowa High School All-Star basketball games held at Dallas Center Grimes High School Saturday, March 23. In January of this year, Waukon High School cheerleading coaches Amy and Lexie Bieber recorded try-out videos for the All-Star selection process consisting of the girls doing a short cheer, a short dance routine and a toe touch. The coaches also wrote recommendations and skill levels for each skill.

Waukon boys golf team will benefit from five returning letterwinners for its 2019 campaign

With another one of its largest teams in recent history, the Waukon boys golf program returns nearly all of its top-end players from last season for a 2019 campaign that has seen 19 young men report for early-season duty. Five of this season’s golfers will return with varsity letterwinning experience from two different grade levels, including four multi-year letterwinners.

The Indians were scheduled to get their 2019 campaign underway at home to start this week, hosting both South Winneshiek and Charles City Monday and Tuesday, April 1 and 2, respectively. The golf Tribe was further scheduled to continue its strong early dose of home course advantage, hosting MFL/MarMac and Waverly-Shell Rock in a home triangular Tuesday, April 9.

“We’re looking forward to getting some consistent weather, and looking to keep on improving each meet,” Coach Benson said as the 2019 season gets underway.

Waukon, Kee girls basketball teams to be represented at this weekend’s IGCA All-Star Games by Ahlstrom, Walleser


Playing in IGCA 3A All-Star Game ... Waukon High School girls basketball senior Maddie Ahlstrom will be one of 30 Iowa high school girls basketball seniors in Class 3A playing this Saturday, April 6 in the Iowa Girls Coaches Association All-Star Games at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. Ahlstrom will suit up for the Class 3A White squad for a 12 noon match-up against the Class 3A Grey squad.

Playing in IGCA 1A Select Game ... Kee High School girls basketball senior Makayla Walleser has been chosen to represent the top Class 1A Iowa high school girls basketball players as a member of the Class 1A Select All-Star Team playing in the Iowa Girls Coaches Association All-Star Games this weekend at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. A pair of local seniors will be representing their schools one final time this season playing with their top-end peers in the Iowa Girls Coaches Association Senior All-Star Games this Saturday and Sunday, April 6-7 at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. Waukon High School senior Maddie Ahlstrom and Kee High School senior Makayla Walleser will each suit up for that All-Star series for their respective squads.

Ahlstrom is one of 10 seniors selected to play for the Class 3A White squad, a team coached by Nate Wall and Marc Renning from Carroll High School and featuring Josie Condon of Estherville Lincoln Central, a team coached by Waukon native Don Martindale this season. That White squad will take on the Class 3A Grey squad to kick off this year’s All-Star weekend at 12 noon this Saturday, April 6. The Class 3A Grey squad will include fellow Northeast Iowa Conference seniors Drew Becker of Oelwein and Maddi Moorman of New Hampton.
