Doris "Mikie" Ewing

 

Doris F. “Mikie” Ewing, 96, of Postville died Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville. Funeral Services were held Saturday, November 22 at the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville, with Rev. Gary Catterson as the officiant. Interment was held in the Postville Cemetery.

Doris Frances, the daughter of Claude and Ruby (Thornton) Bacon, was born April 12, 1918 in Clayton County. She attended country school and later NICC (Area One) in Calmar.

Doris was united in marriage with James Edward “Jim” Ewing August 26, 1936 at the Methodist Church in Waukon. She worked for Keener Cleaners in McGregor, Growth Turkey Plant (Iowa Turkey Products) and V & J Café in Postville, and she was a nurse’s aide at the Postville Good Samaritan Center.  Mikie’s greatest pride was her 10 years working as an Allamakee County Homemaker.

Mikie was a longtime member of the Community Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian Women and Eastern Star. Mikie and Jim were members of a dance club at Dreamland Ballroom and belonged to several card clubs. Mikie was famous for her homemade noodles, buns, brownies and fudge. Saturday nights she enjoyed watching Guy Lombardo and Lawrence Welk on television, and she loved Laurel and Hardy movies.

Mikie is survived by her children, Bonnie Stee of Castalia, Gary Ewing of McFarland, WI, Linda (David) Schierholz of Postville, and Lyle (Teresa) Ewing of Auburn, IN; 23 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and her stepbrother, John Kolowinski of Marion.

Mikie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jim; her granddaughter, Lisa Ewing; her great-grandson, Anthony Schierholz; her father, Claude Bacon; her mother, Ruby Bacon-Kolowinski; her stepfather, Jake Kolowinski; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Lois and Joe Hagensick and Leone and Merrill Gruber; a son-in-law, Merle Stee, Jr.; and two daughters-in-law, Charlotte and Betty Ewing.
