The Waukon boys track team punched its ticket to extension of the 2015 season by qualifying four events for the Class 3A field of the Iowa High School State Track Meet Thursday, May 14 at the State Qualifying Meet hosted by Decorah. Each of those four events involve return trips by previous qualifiers, including all five seniors on this year’s team.
Two of those State Meet qualifications for the Indians came automatically in all half-mile fashion, as the foursome of junior Peyton Hesse and seniors Adam Benzing, Marshall Lyons and Landon Sivesind earned qualification in championship fashion by breaking the tape in the 4x800 with a clocking of 8:27.08. Lyons then clinched automatic qualification again with a runner-up finish in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:08.76. That foursome had gained State Meet qualification last year in that same relay event, although Hesse was unable to compete in the season grand finale due to a hip injury.
Also making return trips with qualifications based on their performances instead of placewinnings was the senior pair of Jake Ronan and Travis Herman with third-place results that landed within the top eight best remaining performances throughout Thursday’s Class 3A State Qualifying Meets. Ronan’s third-place finish came in 52.17 seconds in the 400 meter dash to land him 21st in the final 24-runner Class 3A State Meet field in that event, while Herman sailed 20’5.25” for third in the long jump to rank 19th among Class 3A’s State Meet qualifiers in that field event.
