Marceline Schmitz

Marceline Schmitz, age 84, of LaPorte City, formerly of Gilbertville, died Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at Unity Point Heath/Allen Memorial Hospital of Waterloo. Services were held at Gilbertville Immaculate Conception Church Monday, November 2, with burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Gilbertville.
Marceline Schmitz was born May 22, 1931 to Orville and Christina (Knipp) Kettman in Waterloo. She grew up in Gilbertville and attended Gilbertville Schools.
Marceline married Eugene Schmitz October 11, 1950 at Immaculate Conception Church in Gilbertville. She was a homemaker and bookkeeper for her husband’s business, Gene Schmitz Masonry. Marceline was a very talented seamstress, and made many items for her family, including Baptismal and First Communion gowns for her grandchildren.
She loved her weekend home in Lansing, where she enjoyed visiting her family and friends, relaxing and spending time on the Mississippi River. Marceline took pride in her flower garden and home and she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Marceline is survived by her son, Steven (Romy) Schmitz of Hudson; four daughters: Susan (Steve) Wagner of Waterloo, Julie (Jim) Gardner of LaPorte City, and Lori (Greg) Leppert and Lisa Leppert, both of Lansing; a son-in-law, Mark Wagner of Osage Beach, MO; 15 grandchildren: Justin (Cicely) Wagner, Emily (Wes) Vogel, Matt (Kelli) Wagner, Claire Wagner, Cassandra (Mike) Schmitz, Dakota, Dallas (Sabre) and Garrett Schmitz, Aubrie (Justin) Miller, Ashton (Becca) Gardner, Avery and Aidan Gardner, Jillian Leppert, Aaron (Laura) Leppert and Allyson Leppert; 11 great-grandchildren: Daetin, Gianna, Gracelyn, Cora, Drey, Gage, Myla, Olivia, Saylor, Bellamy and Parker; her brother, Louis (Sandy) Kettman; and two sisters, Gladys (Don) Bartlett and Joyce (Herb) Pelton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gene; her daughter, Lynn Wagner; and her brother, Merle Kettman. Marceline was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, and she will be missed by all who knew her.
