Airsoft guns confiscated at Postville school during May 23 student incident

Monday, May 23, the Postville Police Department investigated an incident at the Postville Community School involving two sixth grade juveniles with plastic spring-loaded airsoft guns on school grounds. The incident happened around lunch time, in which approximately five students were shot with plastic BBs. No serious injuries were reported. The two students involved were removed and school operated as scheduled for the remainder of the school year.

Tuesday, May 24, the Postville Community School District partnered with Keystone AEA, Postville Police Department and a member of the School Safety Coalition to provide open dialogue for all fifth and sixth grade students. This conversation included an opportunity for these students to ask questions in both a large and small group setting. The primary focus of the conversation was to encourage student empowerment and promote resiliency-building skills. Additional staff was made available for the remainder of the school year to provide support services for any students who are in need of additional assistance following the incident.

Any further details are being held until a complete investigation can be completed. The Allamakee County Attorney's Office is working with the Postville Police Department. A criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
