Alice Huffman

Alice R.  Huffman, 94, of Waukon died Monday, January 30, 2017 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 7 at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon, with Pastor Tim Rupert officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Alice Ruth Huffman was born March 14, 1922 in Waukon at the Lizzie Sherman Home, the daughter of Paul Theodore and Lydia Esther (Flage) Helming. She was baptized and confirmed at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon and attended Ludlow #2 and #5 country schools and graduated from Waukon High School in 1941. Alice worked for several area families and at the S&D Cafe.

October 18, 1946, she married William "Bill" Huffman in La Kota. Alice did housekeeping duties and cooking at the Allamakee County Courthouse Jail during the time Bill was Sheriff from 1949 to 1960.

She was a lifelong member of Zalmona Presbyterian Church, where she was active in Sarah Circle and ladies aid. Alice was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening, canning, attending community events, and traveling to many parts of the country with Bill and the kids.

Survivors include her children, Paul Huffman of Waukon and Jean Ann Krueger of Waukee; three grandchildren, Lyn Krueger Baier, Darci (Bryan) Lantz and Andrea Krueger; four great-grandchildren, Greta Baier, and Taylor, Ian and Noah Lantz; and a sister, Donna Schutta of Mesa, AZ. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill, who died in 1988; and a brother, Ralph Helming.
