The Waukon Music Department will be hosting the 8th annual Pops Concert this Saturday, February 24 at the Waukon Middle School gymnasium. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with concert time at 7:30 p.m. The Pops Concert features high energy musical numbers from the 1950s through today. Nearly every musical group at the Waukon Middle School and High School participates in this concert, including the jazz bands, select sixth grade vocalists and all choral groups in seventh through 12th grades. "This event has proven to be very successful each year. The students look forward to the performances and seeing all the decorated tables,” stated JoAnn Sherman, Waukon High School Band Director.

Some of the numbers performed this year will include "You Can’t Stop the Beat” from the musical Hairspray, and “Dream On” by Aerosmith. Plus, the drumline and high school band will perform “Any Way You Want It” and the jazz bands will perform “Night Mist,” “Keep the Motor Runnin’,” and “Full Court Press.” The money raised from this event has been allocated in the past by the Allamakee Music Boosters to help purchase items such as drum line equipment, risers, pianos and various pieces of equipment for all grades, as well as well as providing scholarships for students attending camps.

"I am so impressed with my students' abilities to sing and dance. I have challenged them, and they are meeting my expectations. You will not want to miss the last mass sixth-12th grade piece, "Seasons of Love" from the musical Rent.  It’s a show-stopping, tear jerker!” stated Sarah Palmer, Waukon High School Vocal Director. “The chamber choir will perform a piece from the new musical Hamilton. 'My Shot' is sung and rhythmically-spoken from the viewpoint of Alexander Hamilton and his friends. The song is about joining a movement to gain the United States' independence from Britain.  Hamilton states, 'I am not going to give up my shot,' in regards to not giving up his chance to fight for his county. It is truly a moving, thought-provoking, and historically meaningful piece."

A Tastefully Simple Bakeless Bake Sale will be going on at the concert as well with numerous items offered for a free will donation. The Pops Concert is open to the public for a fee  and includes refreshments. The general admission seating is on a first come, first served basis in the bleachers and chairs located in the back of the gym.

There are a few tables remaining for groups of 10 to reserve for the show. These tables are available for $70. Anyone who would like to host one of these tables for 10, or who would like more information, is asked to contact Shelly Lydon at 563-568-8670 or email her at WaukonMusical@live.com.
