Waukon girls cross country team runs to 12th-place finish at State Cross Country Meet

Top-10 Class 2A senior ... Waukon girls cross country senior Katelyn Benzing wrapped up her high school cross country career among the top upperclassmen in Class 2A at this year’s State Cross Country Meet held at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course near Fort Dodge Saturday, November 2, which is no small feat considering the top four Class 2A individuals at this year’s season grand finale were all seniors. Recording the 10th-best finish by a senior in this season’s Class 2A State Meet field, Benzing led the Indians in her final high school race with a 41st-place overall finish in a time of 20:52.0. The 2019 Waukon girls cross country campaign was brought to a close where all teams yearn to have their season ended, as the Lady Indians competed in their third consecutive Class 2A State Cross Country Meet held Saturday, November 2 at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course near Fort Dodge on a day that was mostly sunny but definitely chilled, and even more so by a stiff breeze at times. Ranked 12th in the final Iowa Track and Field Coaches poll heading into the season grand finale, the distance Tribe made that prophecy ring true, placing 12th in that final 15-team Class 2A field and scoring 262 team points to finish just a single point shy of equaling last season’s 11th-place finish for the Indians.

Behind a repeat individual State Championship effort from senior Marie Hostetler, Mid-Prairie Wellman claimed its third consecutive Class 2A State Team Championship, edging out Williamsburg by a single point for this year’s top honors. That Williamsburg team is coached by Waukon High School 1994 graduate Nick Nordheim, who guided his Williamsburg team to its second consecutive Class 2A State Runner-Up finish by this year’s final one-point margin.
