Brother Leo Jones

Brother Leo Jones, FSC, 80, died December 1, 2020 at Amita Adventist Hospital in Bolingbrook, IL. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 12 at the St. Charles Borromeo Center on the campus of Lewis University in Romeoville, IL with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11 a.m. The services will be live streamed on the Lewis University’s You Tube channel at the following link: https://youtu.be/fSrh6IkLe4Y. Masks and social distancing will be required, and the number of participants will be limited. Interment will be at the Moody Cemetery in McGregor.

A De La Salle Christian Brother for 62 years, Leo was born in Waukon, the son of John and Irene (Ryan) Jones. In 1958 he graduated from St. Patrick’s Catholic High School in Waukon, entered the novitiate of the Brothers in Glencoe, MO, and professed his first vows the following year. Brother Leo earned his B.A. and M.Ed. degrees from St. Mary’s College in Winona, MN.

During his years as an educator he served at St. Paul High School (Chicago), Bishop Gallagher High School (Harper Woods, MI) and at La Salle Manor Retreat Center (Plano, IL). For one year he was a staff member at St. Cassian’s Centre, a youth retreat facility in Kintbury, England.

For 30 years Brother Leo served at St. Joseph High School in Westchester, IL as English teacher, dean, assistant principal, principal and Associate Director of Development. In 2008 he moved to Lewis University in Romeoville, IL and at various times was Coordinator of the President’s Student Advisory Council, tutor for the Success Program, and co-chair of the American Disability Act Risk Committee.

Survivors include his sisters-in-law, Mary Anne (Jones) Otting of Waukon and Rose Jones of Des Moines; his nieces and nephews, Gregg (Maura) Jones of Waukon, Tammy (Greg) DeHaai of Waukee, John (Cheryl) Jones of Des Moines, Scott Jones of Postville, Loretta (Scott) Jones-Muffett of Griffith, IN, Heather (Earl) Zezulka of Waukon, Charlotte Jones of Des Moines, Jermy (Melissa) Jones of Cresco and Sarah (Thomas) Wells of Lawrence, KS; many grand-nieces and nephews, and the De La Salle Christian Brothers.

Special friends include the Dowles, Julian and Tessa, Aidan (Sue), Mark (Nicky), Peter (Angela), Christian (Maggie), Liz (Michael), Gerard (Sarah) and their families of Newent, Gloucestershire, England.

He was pre-deceased by his parents; his brothers, Frank Jones, Neil Jones and Wayne Jones; and his sisters-in-law, Shirley Jones, Roxanne Jones and Marie Jones.
